3. Make a rough outline of whom, where, and what you need to film.
What are they doing? What questions do you need to ask? Who do you have to call? What locations should you use? When can this be done? What visuals will be needed? When is it most convenient for the subject to be filmed? What style do you want to attempt while filming? Know all of this information (not just in your head, make an outline and story board) before you even think about grabbing a camera.
I plan on filming several gay students here at Hilliard Davidson High School. I was going to film in and around Hilliard, in the school, and anywhere else that the student wants to go, i.e. a special place he/she likes to go to think or hang out. I was going to ask what struggles the students go through, and other things that normal students go through just to see what the perspective is from a gay person's view point. This will start as soon as i acquire gay students who are willing to share this personal information with myself and the world. I also, want to film several straight students perspectives on similar topics that i asked the gay students, just to show how all people can be similar, or to see if there is any difference.

Documentary
1. Generate an Idea. Think of something that you might want to document on video.
Something big and universal is a good starting point, but you’ll have to narrow it down to something manageable. Pick a topic you are genuinely interested in.
- Gay Rights
- Gay marriage
- Life of a gay teen
2. Brainstorm the information you know about this subject before filming.
Write 15 things you know and 15 things you want to know about the subject. After you brainstorm, go back through what you’ve written and highlight what you would consider possible themes or, the “heart” of your movie. This will help you determine what you want to capture and showcase to your viewers.

Big Idea Reflection
This needs to be shared with me by Wednesday, March 6. Also post the answers on your Blogger.
How did you decide on your Big Idea?
I decided my Big Idea project after watching the movie "Fast Food Nation" in health, and i also really hate McDonald's food, so i decided to make a film depicting a distaste for McDonald's (and fast food in general) and the health risks in which McDonald's brings.
How did you decide on a way to show that Big Idea through video?
I decided to show how eating fast food would affect someone over time, even if the person started out perfectly fine.
What video concepts did you decide not to do? Why?
I'm not sure what you mean?
Do you feel you effectively talked about your Big Idea with your video? Why or why not?
I do, because i depicted what the risks of eating fast food regularly are by showing a person eating it a lot, and then having a heart attack.
What was the best part of this process (brainstorming, writing, planning, shooting, editing, etc?) Why was it the best for you?
I enjoyed the editing, because i generally like editing film. That's sort of why i take this class. Although planning what to do was also fun, because there were so many different ways i could have gone about this.
What was the best part of choosing your own Big Idea as opposed to me setting one for you? The worst part?
By choosing my own project, I could do whatever my little heart desired. However, it was a very broad order to fill.
Propose one additional Big Idea video idea that you could accomplish by March 14. I want very specific details: what, who, why, how, when, where.
What: A teen love story similar to Romeo and Juliet.
Who: A teen male who has been dating a teen girl for a long time. But she gets kidnapped and killed.
Why: She is kidnapped and killed because her father is a very wealthy man.
How: He seeks revenge and then gets killed by the police because he kills her captors and then the popo find him in the bloody mess of everhting and shoot him just as he is walking to the girls body. He falls dead an inch away from her.
When: No specific time.
Where: No specific place; except the end blood bath should be in an abandon shack or something.

Big Idea Assignment 1
- A.Decide on a Big Idea that intrigues you. This should have personal interest to you and a lot of potential for exploration. Don’t choose something that you can’t personally connect with. Next, select potential Topics that narrow the focus of the Big Idea. These can change later. Be specific.
My example:
Big Idea: Adventure
Potential Topics: Travel, Local Adventures, Personal Adventures, Grand Explorations, Changing perceptions about Adventure through the ages, Adventure from Male Perspective vs. Female Perspective, Adventure as an addiction
A.) Big Idea: SuspensePotential Topics: horror, murder, tests, test results, pregnancy results, roller-coaster, going downstairs when it's dark at night, text messages that say "i have a question?"
- B.Generate a few “Essential Questions” that can lead to investigation. These questions might directly lead you to a work of art. They may not. That’s okay too.
My example:
- What is Adventure to me?
- What isn’t Adventure to me?
- How do different kinds of people define adventure differently? Similarly?
- How do different cultures define adventure differently? Similarly?
- How do different age groups/generations perceive of adventure?
- How do the genders view adventure differently? Similarly?
- What is the difference between real adventure and the kind of adventure ‘sold’ in movies?
- Is movie-style adventure real? Attainable? Enviable? Laughable?
- What is the most mundane sort of adventure possible?
- What risks are inherent in having adventures?
- What rewards are inherent in having adventures?
B.)
What is suspense?
Why are things suspenseful?
what causes suspense?
what makes it connect to everyone?
what isn't suspense?
What kills suspense?
what makes suspense "real"?
what are reactions to suspense?
- C.Generate at least 10 statements about the Big Idea in the following way:
____________ is about ____________.
My example:
Adventure is about taking risks.
Adventure is about experiencing new things.
Adventure is about being dangerous.
Adventure is about education.
And so on...

Intervention Art Reflection/Rubric
- In your own words, what is intervention?
Intervention is the act of making a difference in someone's perspective of their life, environment, or habits.
- What was the purpose of this exercise?
The purpose of this exercise was to introduce us to a new fun form of art.
- Why did you choose to intervene the way you did? I’m looking for more than “I thought it would be funny” or “no one would expect it.” What social/personal/human issue did you intend to comment on? Why? How?
I chose to make a beach party because in the middle of winter, it could be a fun release of all the boring snowball fights. i thought that by making a winter beach it would offer a release for some people from being cooped up in their homes all day because it's too cold or gloomy to do anything else, unless your in the mindset of going to a beach.
- Why did you choose the location? I’m looking for more thought than “lots of people would be there, so I went there.” How did the location play up your specific idea?
The pond was a close body of water that anyone could get to easily.
- Name three specific examples, ideas, artworks or statements you observed in class that helped you plan for this project.
The ideas mentioned by people around my corner made me want to do something fun.
The snow outside made me want to do something outside in the cold.
The fact that i wanted to have a fun time and do something that makes no sense.
Now pull from all of your answers and write a succinct, coherent three paragraph artist statement about your intervention artwork. Use descriptive language. Explain yourself like the intelligent person you are.
Embed the video on your blog and post your artist statement under it. See my example if you need help.

Artist Statement:
The story goes that libraries are silent. You can’t talk in the library or a mean old librarian lady will shush you. You might even get thrown out if you're a real loud-mouth. The story goes that libraries are boring old places because of this. But Thompson library doesn’t want to be a part of that story. Thompson wants to be new, and cool and fresh. It’s bright in there, and there is glass. Kids wear earphones and listen to music, surf the web, play games or read.
The truth is, Thompson is somewhere between the story it wants to tell about itself and the rehearsed story we all know. For the kid jamming to death metal while he reads about Napoleonic wars, the library isn’t quiet at all. For the girl grooving on Lady Gaga and studying calculus, the library is full of sound. But for those of us on the outside without devices, there really is little sound.
This is why I chose to intervene in the way I did. I saw the duality of the library for what it was; a quiet place where noise existed in small doses. I chose to shout the phrase “Silence is Golden” in a quiet reading atrium. The echo of my voice resonated incredibly off the arched ceiling, and I thought how rarely anyone must hear that sound. I changed the library from what it is to what it wants to be and back again.

"The weather outside was frightful, but the fire was so delightful. And since there's no place to go" make a beach. When everything has been covered with snow and the winter time blues get you down, get outside and throw a beach party! The only way to beat the cold is to make it hot, or at least pretend it is.
There was nothing to do, with a deadline fast approaching. I looked outside and saw nothing but snow. That's when it hit me, i see water. Water everywhere, not snow, but oceans. The beach just needed to be publicized and a party was sure to explode and the shrapnel would be the dullness of this lame winter. What was the worst that could happen, being called down to Mr. Paige's office?
That's why i intervened by making a beach party. i chose to make a sad, rarely used area next to a pond, and turn it into a fun beach. Now, when it seemed to be getting out more then expected, a shark was spotted and the beach was closed. I also got into trouble for the incident, but never-the-less, i intervened with the social norm of just an average pond.
