Documentary Assignment-2

3.  Make a rough outline of whom, where, and what you need to film.

What are they doing?  What questions do you need to ask?  Who do you have to call?  What locations should you use?  When can this be done?  What visuals will be needed?  When is it most convenient for the subject to be filmed?  What style do you want to attempt while filming?  Know all of this information (not just in your head, make an outline and story board) before you even think about grabbing a camera.

I plan on filming several gay students here at Hilliard Davidson High School. I was going to film in and around Hilliard, in the school, and anywhere else that the student wants to go, i.e. a special place he/she likes to go to think or hang out. I was going to ask what struggles the students go through, and other things that normal students go through just to see what the perspective is from a gay person's view point. This will start as soon as i acquire gay students who are willing to share this personal information with myself and the world. I also, want to film several straight students perspectives on similar topics that i asked the gay students, just to show how all people can be similar, or to see if there is any difference.

Documentary

1. Generate an Idea. Think of something that you might want to document on video.

Something big and universal is a good starting point, but you’ll have to narrow it down to something manageable. Pick a topic you are genuinely interested in.

  • Gay Rights
  • Gay marriage
  • Life of a gay teen

2.  Brainstorm the information you know about this subject before filming.

Write 15 things you know and 15 things you want to know about the subject.  After you brainstorm, go back through what you’ve written and highlight what you would consider possible themes or, the “heart” of your movie.  This will help you determine what you want to capture and showcase to your viewers.
